About Familiar Images
Familiar Images is a small guide to the ideas that recur in pictures. It covers themes found in paintings, photography, illustration, and ordinary visual surroundings, using plain language rather than specialist terms wherever possible.
Our approach begins with observation. Before describing an image as hopeful, uneasy, or nostalgic, we consider the visible choices that support that reading. An empty chair, a cropped face, or a patch of bright light can matter, but each belongs to a larger composition.
We also leave room for different interpretations. Personal experience and cultural background affect what viewers notice and recognize. These pages offer ways to describe and compare images, not rules that every viewer must follow.
